After winning the Ulster Junior title last season Rock’s championship pedigree came to the fore again at Killyclogher on Saturday evening when they recovered from a slow start to emerge worthy 1-12 to 1-9 winners over Gortin.

Gortin scored straight from the throw in via Brian McGarvey before Eoghan McGarvey made it 0-2 to 0-0 with only forty five seconds gone on the clock. Eoghan McGarvey then put them further  in front before a Conor McCreesh free opened Rock’s account. McCreesh and Kevin McCullagh traded points from frees before Shane Clarke got a well-crafted Gortin goal for a 1-4 to 0-2 lead. The rest of the half belonged to Rock though with McCreesh getting another couple of points and Ryan Litter and Enda Mallon also on target to leave it all square at the break, 1-4 to 0-7.

Two superb McCreesh frees into the wind got Rock up and running in the second half but going into the final quarter it was level again after Eoghan McGarvey and substitute Sean McKenna registered for Gortin. Rock though stepped on the gas with points from McCreesh and Eamon Ward before substitute Diarmaid Carroll palmed in a goal. Michael Mossey scored three late frees for Gortin but it was Rock who went through to a quarter final meeting with neighbours Cookstown.
