Team Talk Mag

Many Tyrone supporters are looking forward not just to their “Trip to Tipp” on Saturday but the possibility of further days out later in the summer. For some that will result in a considerable amount of travelling as they go in search of glory with the Red Hands. A lot of Tyrone supporters go to considerable expense and bother in order to follow the county team with many even travelling regularly from abroad to watch their heroes.

One such regular visitor is former county footballer Mickey Hughes of Killyman who has been resident in Kentucky since 1981. Mickey runs a very successful Quarry Crushing business there but hasn’t lost his connection or allegiance to his native county returning regularly to Ireland to attend many of Tyrone’s biggest games.

Mickey played minor, under twenty one and senior county football for Tyrone before he emigrated along with his wife Sheila to Louisville Kentucky  as part of his job with the well known engineering company Powerscreen.

Regardless how Tyrone do this weekend or what progress they make in this year’s championship the Hughes clan are set to return to Ireland in August. For this visit however their base will be in Kerry and not in their beloved Tyrone.

The reason for this is that Mickey and Sheila’s daughter Emily will be representing Kentucky in The Rose of Tralee Competition following her selection at the Rose of Tralee Regionals in Portlaoise. The Final itself will take place in Tralee on August 17th and 18th 2015 and Emily will not only be carrying the best wishes of her family and friends from Louisville, but the best wishes and support of the entire Tyrone GAA family.

For those who do not know her, Emily is 22 years old. She was born in Louisville and graduated from University of Louisville in 2014. At present she is a Studio Manager and Fitness Instructor at B You Modern Fitness Boutique. In addition to the honour of competing in one of Ireland’s premier events Emily is looking forward to spending time with family and friends at the Finals in Tralee. All of us at wish her well in her quest.
