Rossa Claim Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Championship Title.
O’Donovan Rossa 4-10 v Rostrevor 1-11
A superb exhibition of score taking from man of the match and O’Donovan Rossa captain Sean Pat Donnelly who finished with 1-05 saw the Belfast boys become the first Antrim team to win the Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Championship. Played in difficult conditions the ability of Colm Murray’s men to score goals proved the difference as both teams gave their all in an excellent final played before a large crowd in Gardrum Park.
It was Rostrevor who got off to the better start with their defence being well marshalled by Paul Morgan and with Padraig McGrath imposing his strength in midfield, they took an early lead following two points from Conor Doyle. However they were rocked when a defensive lapse saw Chris McComish finish to the net but Doyle replied in style with a fine goal of his own. Scores were hard to come by early on but this soon changed when Rossa’s full forward Gareth George scored a wonderful individual goal rounding four men and superbly drilling a left footed shot to the bottom corner. This score was followed by several points from frees by Sean Pat Donnelly to give Rossa a two point half time lead 2-04 to 1-05.
Whatever words of wisdom were passed in the Rossa changing room certainly took effect as a blistering start to the second half saw them scoring 2-04 without reply, the highlight of which was an excellent goal finish from Donnelly which followed one from centre back Nathan Early. Rostrevor battled to get back into the game with the introduction of their injured talisman Jordan Fegan having an immediate effect and five unanswered points could have been even better but for some fine saves from Rossa goalkeeper Domhnall Morgan. But late points from Chris Boyle and a long range effort from Callum McVeigh led to some wild celebrations as Rossa secured the title and bring the wonderful Cuchullin trophy back to the Falls Road.
