Sacred Heart girls are to contest a semi final Under 16 B Kukri sponsored Ulster Schools competition for the first time in the college’s short history.

Sacred Heart College U. 16 girls travelled to Letterkenny to play Loreto Convent on their home pitch on a bitterly cold Friday morning. The Omagh school began well with Niamh Mc Donagh opening the scoring with a well taken goal. This score helped settle Sacred Heart as Louise Sloan hit a fine point from play. Loreto then took charge scoring 2-03 without reply. Derblha Mc Donald got Sacred Heart back on track with a goal and Niamh Mc Donagh fired over a point. Loreto created a few goal scoring chances but Clodagh Mc Cartan in goal was equal to the challenge. She was assisted in her defensive duties by Sharon-Kate Mulryan and Eimear Connolly who put in some very hard work in the fullback line. Loreto managed to add a further 2 points from long range to leave Sacred Heart three points behind at half time, Loreto 2-05 Sacred 2-02.

On the restart Aoife Mc Cullagh’s introduction for the injured Nicole Murphy proved beneficial as she hit a fine point. Loreto hit back immediately the next attack with a goal and added two further points opening what seemed to be a match winning lead. Sacred Heart were forced to dig deep with defenders Sarah O, Brien, Clodagh Mc Ginn, Noleen Carlin and Sophie Ramsey putting in fine second half displays. The midfield pairing of Gallagher and Mc Donagh began to get to grips with the conditions and their ability to run from deep put Loreto Letterkenny under pressure. Two further goals from Niamh Mc Donagh and another major from the hard working full forward Derblha Mc Donald put Sacred Heart in a strong position. Tenacious blocking and hard running from Evangeline Johnston and Aine Mc Grath succeeded in putting the Omagh college ahead.
Loreto hit back with a fine team goal and as the cold weather began to affect the players the introduction of Ciara Mc Dermott and Coblaith Mc Kenna for Sophie Ramsey and Eimear Connolly helped to bolster the defence. Two points from frees put Loreto ahead again before Shauna Browne took the Loreto defence on with a jinxing run and fine finish to the net. Erin Gallagher finished a fine solo effort scoring a point before Loreto endured good fortune when a long range effort dipped under the bar to bring the teams level just as the final whistle blew.
