History was made when Sacred Heart College girls U -16 team qualified for the Under 16 Ulster final following a one point win today at Cookstown MUSA 3G pitch over St. Malachy’s High School Castlewellan. Played in ideal conditions both sides were evenly matched throughout with defences being dominant. In a low scoring first half the Down girls reached the break ahead by double scores 2-02 to 1-01 with Niamh Mc Donagh scoring a point and Shauna Brown converting a penalty for Sacred Heart after she herself had been hauled down. The Tyrone girls may have been four points behind but they knew that they were well capable of turning the game around,
Castlewellan began the second half well with two early points but by then the Omagh girls had really grown into the game. They were now getting on top in the key areas and made their greater fitness and physiques pay. Their defence with Carland, Connolly, Mulryan, Mc Ginn, O’Brien and the strong running and hard tackling Ramsey were becoming more and more dominant. Sophie Ramsay was pivotal to Sacred Heart taking the game to Castlewellan. She broke up several Down raids and on one such occasion led to a goal from Louise Sloan. Ramsay turned the ball over and passed it to Mc Ginn, and then to Mc Donagh before transferring the ball to Louise Sloan who fired an unstoppable shot to the net.
That score lifted the Sacred Heart girls and they came close to scoring on several occasions when substitutes Ciara Mc Dermott Aoife Mc Cullagh and Johnston broke up field but were unfortunate not to score. Mc Donald at full forward tried hard but could not get away from the tight marking fullback. With time running out Sacred Heart midfielder Gallagher punted a long ball forward which broke to Shauna Brown who was again brought down in the square resulting in yet another penalty. Brown was again equal to the challenge slotting the ball into the corner of the net to seal the win and take Sacred Heart through to an historic Ulster final appearance. Final score Sacred Heart Omagh 3-02 Castlewellan 2-04.
