Kildare made the long trip north today for their opening camogie league clash with Tyrone played at Killyclogher. With the pitch in superb condition the Leinster side displayed their prowess as they finished particularly strongly to win on a score line of 7-11 to 1-9.
A goal in the second minute of the game put Kildare on the front foot. Tyrone responded with a point from Sally Mc Cann with Ella Copeland replying almost immediately with a converted free for Kildare. Tyrone then tied the game when full forward Sally Mc Cann took advantage of hesitancy in the Kildare defence and, after a superb pass from Cara Little, lashed the sliotar to the net.
Kildare began to dominate possession and territory with Lea Sutton, Roisin Forde and Aoife Mc Dermott prominent. Caoilfhinn Halliisy hit the net after nineteen minutes and this score was followed by points from Forde, wing back Ella Copeland and full forward Mc Dermott to put the visitors 2-5 to 1-1 in front.
Tyrone added three points before the break from Cara Little, Lara Devlin and the outstanding Aoibhinn Daly but Kildare finished with a brace of points from Ora Carragher and their third goal of the half from midfielder Forde whose strong running and skilful stick work was causing headaches for the Tyrone defence.
Half time score: Tyrone 1-4, Kildare 3-7.
Tyrone began the second half with increased possession and an early point from Kaitlin Gallagher but Kildare hit three points in a row to stretch their lead to 3-9 to 1-5 with scores coming from Aoife Mc Dermott (2) and Niamh Hegarty.
The Red Hands hit three unanswered points to edge closer with Aoibhinn Daly, Ollibhia Farley and Reagan Fay on target. Lara Devlin managed to hit one final minor score for Tyrone but Kildare added three further goals to seal the win from Ally Morgan and Carragher (2) to run out convincing and deserved winners.
