Tyrone senior hurlers claimed their first win of the season when they defeated Louth at Darver on Saturday afternoon on a scoreline of 2-18 to 0-16.

The Red Hands bounced back from their loss at home to Donegal last week to deservedly take the points.

A superb team display saw them establish a three point lead at the break before finishing strongly to earn their first  points of the season.

Louth opened the scoring with a converted free from Darren Geoghan. Tyrone’s response was impressive as they hit five in a row to take a lead they would hold until the end. Fergal Donaghy, Aidan Kelly (3) and Ciaran Magill the men on target.

Louth bounced back to reduce the gap to a single point following scores from Geoghan, Ciaran Mc Kelvey and full back John Casey who ventured forward from defence before striking from distance.

Tyrone responded with a brace of points from Aidan Kelly and a fine strike from Rory Weir as the Red Hands pulled clear once more. The visitors were on top but their tendency to snap at chances prevented them from pulling further away from their opponents.

Geoghan converted two frees for the Louth men to reduce the gap but scores from Ciaran Magill and Micky Little put Tyrone four clear entering the last ten minutes. Louth battled hard to close the gap and a couple of fine strikes from midfielder Conor Murphy reduced the gap to a single point with five minutes of the first half remaining.

Tyrone continued to hurl well with Oran Mc Kee and Fionn Devlin outstanding for Steven Mc Garry’s side. Little, Magill and  James Mc Cann hit points to extend the Tyrone lead but another score from Seaghan Conneely helped send the sides in at the break with Tyrone leading by three 0-13 to 0-10.

Louth came out fired up for the second half as the exchanges became increasingly physical. Substitute Pierce Mullin caused all sorts of trouble for the Louth defence with his pace and ability and he plundered a goal three minutes into the second half to put Tyrone 1-13 to 0-12 in front.

Louth threw caution to the wind as they drove forward in search of scores but in spite of the their best efforts the Louth attack found Mc Kee and Devlin in uncompromising mood. When they eventually managed to get shots on target goalkeeper Conor Mc Elhatton proved himself to be unbeatable with some superb stops in both halves.

A second Pierce Mullin goal all but sealed the win for Tyrone who played the closing minutes with fourteen players after Kiefer Morgan received a second yellow card. However Tyrone showed good game management as they controlled the final eight minutes and ran out comfortable and deserved winners on a final score of 2-18 to 0-16.
