Tyrone Senior Ladies took on Monaghan in the opening round of the National League and ran out convincing winners on a scoreline of 7-11 to 0-11. Played on the superbly appointed Holy Trinity College multi surface this was a game that team manager Darren Mc Cann and his back room staff will take a lot from.

Tyrone played into the wind in the opening half and opened up an early six point lead following points from Cara Mc Namee, Aoife Horisk and Niamh O’Neill and a goal from the hard working Emer Mc Canny. Indeed the score could have higher but for a couple of decent stops by the Monaghan defence and a few near misses by the Tyrone attack.

Horisk and O’Neill added a point apiece before Cara Mc Namee found the net for Tyrone’s second goal of the half as Monaghan struggled with the pace and intensity of the Tyrone press. However the Farney girls finished the half strongly to hit four points unanswered in the closing eight minutes of the half to reach the break 2-5 to 0-6 behind. Their scores came courtesy of Amy Garland, Casey Treanor and Muireann Atkinson.

The second half began with Tyrone very much on top again. Defensively Jayne Lyons, Joanne Barrett and Eimear Quinn made life very difficult for the Monaghan forwards while the driving runs of Maebh Mallon and Aoibhinn Mc Hugh kept the Tyrone forwards supplied with plenty of quality ball. Second half goals from Niamh O’Neill, Aoife Horisk, Cara Mc Namee and Maeve Maxwell helped Tyrone to a comfortable win.

Tyrone ran out comfortable 7-11 to 0-11 winners but more impressively was the intensity they brought to the game and the way that pinned the Monaghan defence inside their own twenty metre line.
