Saturday the 29th of October will live long in the memory of the people in the parish of Greencastle as the ladies of Sperrin Og lifted their first ever Ulster club Title. The girls have produced some mixed performances along the way but when it was needed most against Inniskeen they showed tremendous heart and grit to deliver a title winning display.
They had to deal with the loss due to injury of key players Seaneen Ferrity and Laura Heagney early in the first half but their ability to plunder first half goals proved vital in the final outcome. Tyrone star Eimear Teague led the line magnificently with a player of the match performance. She received fantastic support in the defence from Aisling Fox, Cathy Teague, team captain Margaret Gallagher and under 16 player and first half sub Niamh O’Neill. But this was not about individuals as every player gave their all in search of the title. Kim Mc Cullagh and Louise Mc Dermott got the goals as the forward unit led their opponents a merry dance ensuring the cup came back to Greencastle.
This victory is a tribute to the hard work and forward thinking attitude of all those involved with the club and all associated with it can feel justifiably proud of what they have succeeded in doing. However they do have the small matter of an All Ireland semi final to occupy their minds next week when they entertain Claregalway in Greencastle. Who knows perhaps these girls can go on and emulate the achievements of Sean Teague and his players of a couple of years ago when they lifted The All Ireland title. Now that would be a nice way to round it all off.
