Sperrin Og 2-11 Ard Bó   2-10

Niamh O’Neill announced her return from long term injury with a blistering 1-5 as Sperrin Og edged out Ardboe in the senior championship in Kildress on Monday night. The O’Donavan Rossa’s had led by four before O’Neill was sprung from the bench on the forty minute mark. Her contribution was crucial and a boost too for Tyrone ahead of their Ulster final.

Ardboe had chances to salvage the tie in the closing stages. Erin Forbes saw her second penalty of the tie saved by Michaela Gillen and two further efforts went wide with the Greencastle side holding on to secure a quarter final berth against Errigal Ciaran.

The sides were level at the break. Laura Wylie, Sorcha Mulgrew, the impressive Ally Martin and Forbes had pulled Ardboe clear but Sperrin Og responded well. An Aileen Hackett brace, a point from Amy McCullagh and a well worked goal from Anita McDermott who had earlier brought the best out of Rossa’s keeper Lisa Mallaghan gave Sperrin Og the lead. Yet Martin, Annie Devlin and Rebecca Forbes  levelled matters.

Ardboe stormed into a four point lead within two minutes of the restart, Emear Quinn linked with Forbes before picking her spot as Mulgrew tagged on a point. Cue the introduction of O’Neill, a quick fire 0-2 left two points in it but a Forbes penalty pulled Ardboe clear again on forty three minutes. Points exchanged between O’Neill 0-2, Hackett, Forbes and Niamh Quinn still left four between the teams though with just over five minutes left.

O’Neill then collected on the right and drove through fire to Callaghan’s net.  A short time later a point from Kim McCullagh levelled the contest before O’Neill’s fifth point gave the Greencastle outfit the lead. There was late drama, Hannah Quinn was upended close to goal.  The resultant penalty from Forbes well saved as Sperrin Og breathed a sigh of relief as two further scoring chances floated wide.

A hugely entertaining and exciting contest at Kildress that certainly went down to the wire.  O’Neill’s scoring tally so important while Ciara Rocks turned in an excellent shift for Ardboe
