Danske Bank MacLarnon Cup quarter-final
St Ciaran’s Ballygawley 1-12 Our Lady’s & St Patrick’s Knock 3-5
Once again, Darragh Canavan was the star man as St Ciaran’s Ballygawley edged out Our Lady’s & St Patrick’s Knock in a thrilling Danske Bank MacLarnon Cup quarter-final in Derrymacash yesterday.
Canavan popped up with the winning point in the third minute of injury-time after the game looked set to go to extra-time following an equalising point at the start of added time from Peter Loughran.
Canavan was a problem for the Knock defence right from the start, getting in behind them to take a long ball and find the net as early as the second minute.
It was a great start for St Ciaran’s, playing into the stiff breeze and it gave them a foothold as their defence did well to keep Knock to 1-3 in the opening quarter, Daniel Guinness the goal-scorer.
Ballygawley were sharp on the break during the second quarter and were only a point in arrears at the interval, 1-4 to 1-3.
Caoimhin O’Donnell hit three points and Canavan two during the opening ten minutes of the second half only for Knock to arrest that progress with a goal from Peter Webb.
O’Donnell and Cormac Donnelly responded with points but a super strike from Odhran Boyle tied the game at 1-10 to 3-4 in the 55th minute.
Tomas Hoy pointed a free, but Loughran stepped up to the plate to equalise in injury. But it wasn’t enough as Darragh Canavan showed a cool head to clinch a semi-final spot for his team.
St Ciaran’s : Darragh Canavan 1-3, Caoimhin O’Donnell 0-6, 0-3 frees, Tomas Hoy 0-2, 0-1 free, C Donnelly 0-1 45.
Knock : Peter Webb 1-3, 0-2 frees, Daniel Guinness 1-0, Odhrán Boyle 1-0, Peter Loughran 0-1, James Smyth 0-1.
