St. Ciaran’s Ballygawley lifted their first MacLarnon Cup title after a close and exciting contest with Our Lady’s Castleblaney on Friday in Armagh.

The Tyrone school won the toss and opted to play into the wind in the first half. That decision appeared questionable twelve seconds into the game when Blaney corner forward James Wilson found the net following a long ball straight from the throw in.

The Tyrone school refused to panic however and settled to their task. Scores from Cathair Quinn and Caoimhin O’Donnelly reduced the deficit and although Our Lady’s added three points to their tally it was clear that St. Ciaran’s full forward line of Hoy, Canavan and O’Donnell had the beating of their direct opponents.

Midway through the first half and the score read 0-7 to 1-3 in favour of St. Ciaran’s with three great scores from Canavan and fine points from Daniel Millar and Callum Corrigan.

At that stage the Ballygawley lads were coping well with both the opposition and the elements. However that all changed in the fifteenth minute when David Hanley scored Our Lady’s second goal and James Wilson and Aaron Courtney tagged on points.

Once again however St. Ciaran’s rose to the challenge and outscored their opponents in the second quarter four points to three to go in at the break trailing 0-11 to 2-8.

The second half saw the Monaghan lads sit very deep in defence and for the opening minutes of the half that tactic seemed to work. St. Ciaran’s struggled to penetrate their defence initially before a fine point by Pascal Donaghy opened their second half account. Scores from Canavan (2) and Oguz followed soon after to put them ahead and in control.

The Blaney College were forced into a rethink of their approach and began to push forward but excellent work from team captain Quinn and midfield pairing Millar and Oguz ensured that the Monaghan school found scoring chances hard to come by.

Two points from placed balls in the second half was all Our Lady’s had to show for their thirty minutes of effort while St. Ciaran’s added 1-8 to their tally. The goal came right at the end from Callum Corrigan and sealed a historic win for the lads from Tyrone on a final score of 1-19 to 2-10.
