St Joseph’s Coalisland made a winning start to the defence of their Tyrone Under 16 Championship with a hard fought but deserved 3-11 to 3-08 win over Dean Maguirc at Pomeroy this afternoon. The East Tyrone lads started well with two goals from Gerard Woods but a Pearce Hollywood goal helped The Dean reach the break just four points behind. On the restart Carrickmore went into overdrive and points from Pearse Grimes and Gabhan Mc Crystal plus a goal from Gavin Goodfellow put The Dean in front. However St Josephs responded with points from Cahir and Macauley Quinn and a goal from Gerard Quinn to once again take control of the game. A goal deep in injury time from Sean Mc Bride reduced the arrears but failed to threaten the result. Coalisland now progress to the next round of the competition while Carrickmore await the winners of the game between Castlederg and St John’s Dromore in the back door section.
