St Macartans Retain Senior Title.
Friday 24.06.2011

St Macartans Ladies retained their senior championship title by a single point against a spirited Carrickmore side at Beragh tonight in appalling conditions. It took a free late in injury time to decide the outcome but Macartans will be delighted to have retained The Jarlath Kerr Cup . Carrickmore played with the elements in the first hal and were full value for their 2-4 to 0-4 half time lead with their goals coming from Elaine Coyle on five minutes and Gemma Begley on twenty minutes. However the fact that Carrickmore failed to score during the second half proved decisive in the final outcome. Macartans laid siege on their opponents goal throughout the second period but it took them until twenty five minutes in to really close the gap. A Cathy Donnelly pile-driver of a free evaded the entire Carrickmore defence to nestle in the back of the net to leave a single point between the sides. Macartans were level within a minute following a foul on Cathy Donnelly which also resulted in a yellow card for Cathy Mc Aleer reducing Carrickmore to fourteen players. With time running out Cathy Donnelly also received a yellow card for Macartans but there was further drama when a late free awarded to Macartans led to a one point victory for the Clogher Valley girls.
Unfortunately there were some unsavoury incidents after the game which resulted in injuries to officials. A full investigation will now take place regarding the nature of these matters.
