St.Macartans lifted the Senior league title when they got the better of a gallant Killeeshil side in an entertaining final at Pearse Park in Galbally on Sunday afternoon. There was little between the sides in the first half with the experience of the winners shining through after the break as they recorded a 1-16 to 1-8 victory.
The winners were out of the blocks quickly with a brace of points from Chloe McCaffrey and one from team Captain Shannon McQuaid before Killeeshil got going. Grainne Rafferty hit a trio of points with Cara McRory also on target as they got their noses in front by the 10th minute. Efforts from Tara O’Hagan and McCaffrey edged St.Macartans back in front before Killeeshil struck for a Zoe Loughran goal. That left them 1-4 to 0-5 in front but it proved to be the only time they would lead as they failed to score for the remainder of the half. a Joline Donaghy free was followed by a brace from play from McCaffrey to leave it 0-8 to 1-4 at the interval.
On the restart McCaffrey converted two frees either side of a point from play from Collen McQuaid before the winners took a firm grip on proceedings when wing back Slaine McCarroll found the net. Donaghy and Paul Donnelly tagged on points as the gap rose to nine. To their credit Killeeshil kept battling with Rafferty landing another trio of points but St.Macartans remained in control. McCarroll and Collen McQuaid had late points with Loughran responding for Killeeshill as St.Macartans ran out worthy winners on the day.
