St. Malachy’s Primary School Glencull played host to the first Allianz Cumann na mBunscol one wall handball blitz on Friday past.

10 primary schools from all over Tyrone who are promoting the GAA sport travelled to play on Glencull’s newly installed Handball wall. The wall was one of 24 one walls that were built in the city west hotel last summer and used for the world handball championships. These championships have inspired a new wave of young handball enthusiasts in Glencull who are lucky enough to have one of the walls used at the championships installed in their school.
Chris Curren, former CEO of Handball Ireland, kicked off the day by introducing Barry Devlin, current Irish Nationals men’s B 40×20 champion and Conor McElduff, one of the top under 21 one wallers in Ireland, who played an exhibition match. This highlighted the skills of the game for the watching crowd who then had a chance to work on their own handball skills.
Orla O Neill, Declan Sherlock and Conor Hackett, all Tyrone coaches then led the children through the fundamental skills of Handball with games and drills. This was followed by a chance for all of the players to face off against each other on the new One Wall.
Past pupils of Glencull, and current pupils at St. Ciaran’s College Ballygawley, Maria Canavan, Shannon Monaghan, Ciaran Mc Kenna and Paudríg Mc Nelis then played exhibition matches along with World Silver medallist Darragh Canavan.
Children from St Brigid’s Altamuskin, Sacred Heart PS Tattyreagh, St. Mary’s PS Ballygawley, St Columbkilles P.S Carrickmore, St. Mary’s PS Killyclogher, St Macartan’s PS Clogher, St. Brigid’s PS Augher, St. Teresa’s Loughmacrory and St. Patrick’s PS Gortin joined all the children from Glencull for the morning of handball. Everyone involved went home with a handball sponsored by Allianz Cumann na mBunscol and are now enthused about the game.
This is just one of the activities that are under way at Glencull to celebrate the school’s 180th year. They are currently compiling a book that will be launched on the 13th of September followed by a family fun day on the 14th.
