Coalisland Thirds experienced something of a baptism of fire in their first competitive match of the new league season. They hosted Drumquin Wolfe Tones on Sunday afternoon on a day when the West Tyrone team were in fine form. The visitors hit their highest competitive score for many years to take the win on a score line of 7-13 to 0-8. It was a historic day in more ways than one for Drumquin as Club stalwarts Ryan Mc Callion and Lele Patterson made history having played competitive football for the club across four decades from the 90s, 00s, 10s and now 20s. Some achievement for two incredible club men !!!!! As for the game itself Drumquin settled quickly and scored freely. They led by twelve points at the break and pulled away to record a twenty six point win. Sean Mc Donagh top scored with 3-2 while Oisin Mc Menamin (2-0), Ryan Mc Callion(1-3), Cormac Rodgers (1-1), Padraig Rodgers (1-1), Brendan Gormley (0-1), Frankie Mc Alynn (0-3), Lele Patterson (0-2) and Matthew Mc Dermott (0-1) were also on target. Coalisland battled hard but their lack of match practice proved decisive. Kevin Corr (3) and Ryan Magee (3) top scored for the Fianna while Tiarnan Duffy and Frank Lowe were also on target.

Cookstown laid down something of a marker on Sunday when they saw off the challenge of Brocagh Emmetts by fourteen points. After an impressive opening half they led 2-9 to 0-2 with their goals coming from Conor Mullan and Barry Potter. The pace dropped somewhat in the second half with the home side adding six points to their tally and the Fr Rocks hitting seven points of their own. Matthew Carberry (6), Nathan Connolly (2), Owen Mulligan, Dean Teague, Ruairi Mullan, Conor Bayne and Ryan Pickering were all on target for the winners. On a day to forget for Brocagh Micky Hughes hit three points, Tiernan O’Neill bagged two and  Justin Canavan, Marc Canavan and Patrick Canavan all hit one each.

A closely fought North Tyrone derby saw Clann na nGael and Urney produce a hard fought encounter that turned with the introduction of  Urney sub Jamie Mc Aleer early in the second half. A Johnny Lafferty goal helped his side reach the break 1-5 to 0-7 in front after Clan had looked the team most likely during the opening thirty minutes. First half scores from Gareth Mc Dermott, Shea Browne, Danny Conwell and Danny Ball left CNG in a reasonably strong position which was further strengthened when Browne and Mc Dermott pointed shortly after the restart. Two Urney scores from sub Mc Aleer tied the game before CNG moved three clear. It looked at that stage that there would be only one winner but Urney dug deep and Mc Aleer, Lafferty and Daryll Maxwell got the scores that secured the win for Urney in spite of late points from Joe and Danny Ball.

Daniel Millar (0-7) was scorer in chief for Killeeshil on Sunday as they saw off the challenge of a very determined Derrytresk side 3-16 to 2-10. Pascal Donaghy hit five of his team’s points while John Mc Mullan (1-2), Jason Doyle (1-1) and Liam Hughes (1-0) were all on target as the hoops recorded a nine point win. Niall Gavin was in outstanding form for the Hill Men hitting 1-9 while Conor Corr (1-0) and Cathal O’Neill (0-1) accounted for their other scores.

Eskra entertained Brackaville and won out by two points in the end 0-16 to 2-8. Cathal Meegan (5) and Joe Mc Carroll (5) did most of the scoring for the winners while Niall Marlowe, Mickey Woods and Aaron Kelly each bagged two points.The teams were level at the break 1-5 to 0-8 and although Brackaville finished with two goals and only two points behind, the score line was slightly flattering as their second goal came right at the death. Dale Mc Sorley (1-3) ,Rian Mc Hugh (1-0), Ronan Mc Hugh (2) Cian Ferguson , Marty Gervin and Stiofain Gervin were all on target for Brackaville.

Drumragh and Kildress played out an entertaining game at Clanabogan on Sunday with a first half Caolan Mc Namee goal proving the difference as the Wolfe Tones triumphed 1-10 to 0-10. Mattie Mc Guigan (6), Philip Lennon (2) and Pauric Lagan (2) were on target with points for the winners. Shane Cleary once again was top scorer for the Sarsfields with 0-5 while Shane Devine (2) Eoin Montgomery, Eamon Mc Cann and Tommy Mullin all contributed points.

Killyman travelled down to Fintona and produced one of their best away displays for a number of years before recording a 2-14 to 0-11 win over the Pearses. After a competitive first half Fintona led 0-8 to 0-6 at the break. Mark Mc Glynn, Cathal Starrs (5), Peter Mc Glynn and Niall Murray were among the points. Killyman improved after the break and with Michael Donnelly (7) in fine scoring form they soon overhauled the deficit before pulling away to win. Owen O’Rourke (1-3) and Adam Roche (1-0) got the goals while Brian Óg O’Rourke, Enda Mc Gahan, Eamonn Donnelly and Cathal a Mc Gahan all bagged a point each.

The All County League finally got underway on Saturday evening when Errigal Thirds hosted Castlederg in the first fixture of the weekend. A very impressive and well organised Derg side hit the ground running and recorded the first win of the new season. They raced into a 1-4 to no score lead inside the opening quarter with Brian Coyle finding the net and Mark Corry (3) and Caolan Harvey with points. Errigal’s Connor Mc Aleer netted direct from a free in the second quarter to get his side’s challenge up and running. Both teams added a couple of points apiece before half time to leave the Derg 1-6 to 1-2 in front at the break. Bradley Devine and Adam Traynor got the scoring going after the restart for the Derg while Patrick Mc Dermott split the posts for Errigal. Any chance of an Errigal comeback disappeared however when Traynor and Connor Harper both hit the net. Points from Devine and Corry stretched the lead further before Corry struck his team’s fourth goal of the game from the penalty spot. Niall Molloy concluded the scoring with a late point for the hosts but Castlederg were convincing winners on the day.
