Strabane Sigersons hosted their 11th annual Gerald O’Doherty Under 10 Memorial tournament on Saturday past. Teams from Aghyaran, Cappagh, Castlederg, Clann na nGael, Glenelly, Owen Roes, Termon, Urney and Strabane took part in what was a very entertaining morning of football.
Each of the teams contested in initial group games which resulted in Cappagh and Strabane being joined by the two Termon teams in the semi-finals. Cappagh took on Termon A in the first of the semi finals, the Donegal team got the first few scores and Cappagh responded well with a few points but just fell short at the final whistle. The Strabane team lined out against the second string from Termon in the second semi final. With one Donegal side in the final the home team were keen to have some Tyrone representation in the final. The two teams were very evenly matched and traded points in a free flowing game of football. With the scores tied at four points each at the final whistle the game was forced into extra time where Sigersons added a further three scores to their tally whilst Termon managed just the one resulting in the Sigersons boys qualifying for the final and the privilege of taking on the Termon first team.

The standard of football throughout the whole tournament had been excellent but the boys from both Termon and Strabane raised their game to a different level in the final. The Strabane team was diligent in defence with the defensive quartet of Joe Bishop, Ben McGavigan, Rory Barkley and Darragh Devlin getting in  countless tackles and blocks to restrict the score line to one apiece at half time. The start of the second half saw Ciarán O’Reilly continue the fine form he showed throughout the tournament as he fired over a fine score from play. The Donegal boys then raced into a two point lead before Gavin Molloy scored a brace of points to level the game and earn the home team another draw and a further period of extra time. There was no let up in the intensity of the game in extra time with Caimin Conwell, Stefan Conway and Oran Gallagher battling it out in midfield creating the chances for Darragh McNulty and Daire Feeney to get the vital scores to secure victory for the Strabane side.

Strabane U10 Captain Ben McGavigan accepted the trophy from Conradh na Gaeilge representative Fearghal Mac Lochlainn in front of a large crowd of parents and well wishers that had hung around in the rain to witness a fantastic climax to a very good day of football. The Sigersons club would like to thank all the travelling teams for taking part in the event . The Club are also very grateful for the input the parents put into these events, without the assistance of parents it would not be possible for the Club to host such events, so a massive thank you to everyone involved. Thanks also to the referees Aran, Noel, Seanie, Eugene and Gary for officiating the games and assisting with co-ordinating the tournament.
