Strabane Sigersons won the Ulster intermediate League title this afternoon following a 1-13 to 2-7 victory over a very determined Ballymcguigan side. The Tyrone side had to bounce back from conceding two soft first half penalties that kept their opponents in the match during a wind assisted first half. Two early Rory Mc Ilroy points were wiped out when Sean Brady converted the first of his team’s two opening half penalties.
The Derry lads were reduced to fourteen men when they had Gary Burke red carded midway through that first half. However Strabane failed to capitalise on the extra man and reached the break a point in front after conceding a second penalty which was again converted by Brady.
The second half was a much better affair as both teams pushed hard for the win. It was nervy stuff at times and became increasingly fractious as the game wore on. A fisted goal from Patrick Roarty gave Strabane a cushion but Ballymcguigan refused to give in and a couple of brilliant scores from midfielder Ciaran Mc Ivor brought them within a point of the Sigersons with two minutes left. Strabane showed great composure however to hit the final match winning scores from John Mc Laughlin and team captain JP Gallagher.
Final score Strabane 1-13, Ballymcguigan 2-7.
