Congratulations to Strabane Sigersons under 16 boys who won the annual David Devine Memorial Tournament on Saturday in Pairc Mac Sioghair. David was just 15 years old when he sadly passed away on a Christmas Eve. He was a youth player with Strabane Sigersons at the time of his death and ironically, he would have been 31 years old on Saturday the day of the tournament. The tournament has been held annually since David’s death and the Devine family has always given great help and support.

On a day of very poor weather conditions there was some great football played between six teams with the counties of Tyrone, Donegal and Derry represented. The six teams played in a group format with each team having five games of ten minutes per half. The teams were; Strabane, Newtownstewart, Downings, Badoney, Trillick and Steelstown.

After the league had been played to a conclusion it was Downings who topped the group with Sigersons runners up so this meant the two teams faced off in a final with Steelstown narrowly missing out.

In the final Strabane began well getting the first two points through Jordan O’Doherty and Jake O’Neill before Downings scored a goal five minutes in. Strabane responded with a point from Oisin McGillion but Downings got the last score of the first half to leave them 1-1 to 0-3 ahead at the break.

Gavin O’Kane levelled for Strabane early in the second half before Downings restored their lead. That score seemed to inspire Strabane and Jordan Gallagher was the man to level the game before the home side grabbed their second major as a high ball wasn’t dealt with by the Donegal lads and Jack Quinn was on hand to fire the ball to the net. Oran McGrath kicked the insurance scored with a brilliant solo effort.

Strabane Team; Liam McElhinney, Anton McGowan, Jake O’Neill, Kevin O’Kane, Eoin Barkley, Aaron McGrath, Dylan Edwards, Gavin O’Kane, Jordan O’Doherty, Jordan Gallagher, Oran McGrath, Matthew Doherty, Oisin McGillion, Eunan McNulty, Jack Quinn, P McColgan, Alex Bishop, Oisin Kelly, Shane Rouse, Anthony Crossan, Garth Duncan, Connor O’Hagan, Cadhla Mac An Chrosin.

Club Chairman and Under 16 manager Liam Sweeney led the presentation proceedings on the day. Firstly club president John McCrory presented a bunch of flowers to David’s mother Chrissy and Tom Brown presented a wreath for David’s grave to his father Terence before Liam presented a Sigersons vase to David’s brother Chris. After this Liam and David’s father Terence presented Gavin O’Kane with the trophy and presented the Strabane team with their winners’ medals.

Thanks to everyone who helped on Saturday especially to Dean Molloy and Liam Sweeney who refereed the games and to everyone who umpired or acted as linesmen throughout the day. Also, a special thanks to all those people who helped with tea and refreshments.

Thanks also to Derry City and Strabane District Council who sponsored the trophies today through their Support for Sport programme.
