Drumquin and Naomh Padraig met in the Grade 4 U14 league final at Aghaloo on Thursday evening in a game that entertained the large crowd present before it finished level Naomh Padraig 3-11, Drumquin 2-14.

There were many fine individual performances on both sides but ultimately this game will be remembered for two teams going flat out in search of a county title.

Naomh Padraig started strongly with Eoghan O’Donnell leading the line and hitting 1-3 out of his side’s opening 1-4. Drumquin were struggling to cope with his strong, direct style of football but with Oisin Gormley and Finnan Patterson pushing hard they managed to drag themselves back into the game.

Patterson’s third point of the half put Drumquin one in front with five minutes of the first half remaining. However two points from Stephen Canavan and a goal from Rian O’Neill sent Naomh Padraig in at the break leading 2-7 to 1-5.

Two quick fire points at the start of the second half by Caolan Mc Ivor stretched the Naomh Padraig lead but Drumquin responded immediately. Oisin Gormley landed three fine points before he hit the net to leave one between the teams.

In an end to end battle the two sides produced some superb football and both goalkeepers were called on to make vitally important saves.

With ten minutes remaining a second goal by O’Donnell left four between the teams and with strong defensive play from both sides it seemed that Naomh Padraig would hold on for the win.

Drumquin however refused to throw in the towel and Oisin Gormley landed two late scores to level the game and take it to a replay.

Scorers: Drumquin, Oisin Gormley 2-8, Fianna Patterson 0-4, Sean Mc Menamin 0-1, Ciaran Mc Gale 0-1

Naomh Padraig: Eoghan O’Donnell 2-6, Rian O’Neill 1-0, Caolan Mc Ivor 0-3, Stephen Canavan 0-2.
