Monaghan are Ulster MFC Champions for the first time since 2013 after a late Donnagh Swinburne penalty wrestled the result away from Derry.  That penalty seven minutes from the end of normal time proved vital in a game that looked destined for extra time.

Inniskeen man Sean Jones was on the scoreboard twice for the Farney men inside the opening five minutes. It took Derry a further 13 minutes to draw level following an Enda Downey free and an Eoghan Hawe point from play.  Monaghan regained the lead in the 19th minute after Killanny man Ronan Grimes popped up from corner back to split the posts.

Downey had the Oakleafers back on terms nine minutes from the break before two Aaron Mulligan frees edged Monaghan ahead with just two minutes to go.  Derry finished the half the stronger however and Glen man Conleth McGuckian’s point was quickly following by an Enda Downey free and a point from play to leave the half time score Derry 0-6 Monaghan 0-5.

Monaghan outscored Derry 0-3 to 0-2 in the opening quarter of the second half. First Sean Jones kicked a point from play which was cancelled out by an excellent Ethan Doherty point.  Aaron Mulligan hit the next two points for Monaghan before Downey levelled the game at 0-8 apiece.

The teams remained locked on that scoreline until Donnach Swinburne smashed home that penalty in the 53rd minute.  Derry’s final score of the game arrived a minute later from Conleth McGuckian but they can county themselves unlucky not to have forced extra time.  It took an excellent double save from Magheracloone’s Ryan Farrelly in the 58th minute to secoure the win for Monaghan.  Fittingly enough Aaron Mulligan hit the last free in the 66th minute to ease Farney nerves.
