Termon GAA win Peter Duffy Memorial Cup.

Strabane Sigersons hosted their Peter Duffy Memorial tournament on Saturday past. In excess of 200 players showcased their football skills in the excellent facilities at Pairc Mhic Sioghair. The tournament is run annually in order to preserve the memory of youth footballer Peter Duffy who passed away 27 years ago. Peter’s mother, Ann Duffy, attended the tournament to assist with the prize giving and was presented with a bouquet of flowers by the Sigersons Club.

With the interest in the tournament growing each year a Peter Duffy Shield was introduced this year so that more teams could enjoy the day’s activities. The Peter Duffy Shield saw Donegal Side St Eunans from Letterkenny qualify to play against Tyrone team Clann Na Gael, the final was a keenly contested game with a single point in the favour of St Eunans separating the sides at the final whistle.

These two Donegal sides were very evenly matched playing excellent football throughout the tournament and the final was no different with both teams contributing to a very entertaining match. Termon started strongly and raced into a 4 point lead at half time but St Eunans fought back to level the game in the closing seconds. During extra time both teams continued with the high standard of football, matching each other score for score but it was Termon who got the all important final score to win the Peter Duffy Cup by the narrowest of margins.

The standard of football throughout the day was excellent, matched by the players discipline and attitude towards the game. Each one of the boys are a credit to their parents and the hard work of their Club coaches.
The tournament ran without a hitch thanks to the Club volunteers who assisted with everything from refereeing and umpiring to the tea making duties. A special word of thanks to Mrs Duffy for giving up her time to assist with the presentation. A massive thank you to all the parents who provided refreshments for the visiting coaches and supporters. A special mention also to Ciarán ‘Moby’ McLaughlin who did a excellent job at organising and co-coordinating another excellent tournament. Last but definitely not least, congratulations to Termon for winning the Peter Duffy Cup and to St Eunans for claiming the inaugural Peter Duffy Shield.
