The championship so far this weekend has delivered three great games that have left the large crowds highly entertained and feeling they have had real value for money. Thursday night’s game was only decided by a very late point by Ciaran Mc Connell deep in injury time that allowed Newtownstewart to pip Dungannon. It was the first time all night that the St Eugene’s had led in the game and like a great middle distance runner they timed their run for the line perfectly. The Clarkes had no time left to mount a comeback but they will feel they were more than a little hard done by considering some of the decisions that went against them including one or two questionable calls by the umpires.

The pace and passion of the club championship was in evidence too in Edendork on Friday night in both the Intermediate and Senior games. Moy and Derrytresk served up a real old fashioned blood and thunder, incident packed match that was only decided by a Sean Cavanagh point deep in injury time. Moy had trailed by two at one stage in the second half and it took a considerable effort from Philip Jordan and his team to haul themselves back into the game. Defeat for Derrytresk was hard to take because they had contributed magnificently to what had been a very entertaining game.

The standard and excitement were maintained by the second game of the evening when Ardboe used all their experience, guile and craft to pip Donaghmore by a single point in a match that had everything. There was drama, intrigue and endeavour aplenty as the light faded and it took a cool head and nerves of steel to see it through. And that was just from the referee! Brian Mc Guigan rolled back the years with a performance of genius as he dragged his team from six points behind to a one point win in the gathering gloom. Donaghmore will be less than happy with the outcome and the nature of it especially as the game entered the final ten minutes and conditions deteriorated.

One thing Friday night proved is that an 8:00pm starting time for championship games is crazy for any venues without proper floodlighting. Granted conditions for both sides were the same but in a highly charged atmosphere with both teams going at it hell for leather it was fortunate that there were no injuries to report at the end.

With the Teamtalkmag.com All Stars function rapidly approaching championship performances are sure to raise the profile of several players and increase their chances of nominations. Two men stood out like beacons on Thursday night as Kevin Gallagher (Newtownstewart) and David Walsh (Dungannon) produced magnificent displays for their teams. Both players have been very consistent for their clubs throughout the season and these displays will have certainly increased their chances of being nominated for the All Star shortlist. It will be interesting to see if any other players can manage to produce similar performances during the remaining matches of the weekend. Stick with teamtalkmag.com as we bring you all the action with live updates from each of the four venues and keep an eye out for potential All Stars or All Star nominees.
