Pomeroy as a venue for club championship matches has always been a bit special in terms of atmosphere and intimacy and once again this evening it lived up to that reputation in the Hunky Dory sponsored Senior and Intermediate championship clashes.
Both games produced real drama, a large number of wides and a couple of highly exciting endings. Brackaville snatched victory over Dungannon with a last minute Martin Gervin goal after a dramatic second half comeback while former county player Tommy Mc Guigan converted a sideline ball in the closing seconds of the senior game to earn a draw for a battling Ardboe.
Dungannon Clarkes will be wondering just how they managed to lose this game after dominating for long periods especially in the first half. Patrick Quinn, Padraig Mc Nulty, Kiefer Morgan and David Walsh stood out as they outplayed and outscored their opponents in an entertaining opening half hour. Things did not look good for last year’s Junior Champions in spite of the best efforts of Che O’Donnell, Gary Ferguson, Martin Gervin and James Mc Ilvenna as they trailed by five points at the break.
Brackaville needed a good start to the second half but Dungannon added a brace of points before the Owen Roes got started. However a couple of points followed by a Gary Ferguson goal and a point from Ciaran Gervin left two points between the sides and it was really game on. Midway through the second half it was nip and tuck between both sides before O’Donnell tied the game at 1-9 apiece. Dungannon were looking shaky but Barry Cassidy put them in a strong position again with a well taken opportunist goal.
With the clock running down it seemed the Clarkes would hold on leading as they were by three points. However Brackaville refused to panic and Ciaran Gervin and Che O’Donnell reduced the gap to one before Martin Gervin snatched the win with his match winning late score.
It was an exciting end to a hugely entertaining game between two well drilled sides and while Brackaville deserve great credit for their unwillingness to accept defeat one has to feel a great deal of sympathy for the Clarkes lads who contributed so much to the game. Final score Brackaville 2-11, Dungannon 2-9.

Ardboe and Trillick played out a low scoring but compelling draw in their Hunky Dory Senior championship first round clash. The Reds were superb in the opening half as they carried out their game plan to a tee. They were quicker and sharper to the break, hunted in packs and repeatedly made blocks to deny the Ardboe forwards any clear cut scoring opportunities. The one negative aspect of their game was the number of wides from scorable positions and that eventually cost them victory.
Trillick led by two at half time 0-3 to 0-1 but Ardboe were much improved after the break. The introduction of Brian and Tommy Mc Guigan helped turn the tide in their favour as Trillick with Mattie Donnelly and Rory Brennan did their best to stem the number of Ardboe attacks. Scoring chances were few and far between but Kyle Coney, Shay Mc Guigan and Frank Mc Guigan recorded points that kept Ardboe in the game. Niall Gormley was superb for Trillick and gave his side a great option when coming out of defence. Indeed late in the game when leading by a point Mattie Donnelly was caught in two minds when he had both Gormley and Lee Brennan well placed to seal the result. The chance was lost and Ardboe broke down the field, won a line ball and Tommy Mc Guigan secured the draw with a great kick.
The score earned the Rossas a replay and judging by the body language of both teams it was clear which side felt they had let the chance slip. The replay is most likely to take place this week but the venue, date and time have still to be confirmed.
