Two More League Points for Newtownstewart.

Newtownstewart’s sharp shooters were too much for an Owen Roes side on Saturday in the ACL. The visitors to Aughabrack- Newtownstewart’s ground currently under redevelopment- had hoped to build on a win last time out versus Glenelly, but a scoring blitz from Kevin Gallagher and Ryan Mayse in the main ensured that there was to be little joy for Owen Roes over the hour.

Owen Roes had taken the lead via Brendan Boggs’ free, before Paul McKiernan levelled up. Two points in three minutes from Gallagher put the St.Eugene’s back in front but Owen Roes would grab the lead back in impressive style on nine minutes.

Sean McBride freed Cathal Mc Shane, and sharp interchanges between Mc Shane and his namesake Ryan Mc Shane saw the latter finish well to the net. Niall Mayse and Boggs exchanged scores before a Stephen Harper dead ball added to Owen Roes’ slender lead.

Despite being slightly ahead on the scoreboard, Owen Roes were about to be reeled in by Newtownstewart. Ryan Mayse’s two quick fire scores got them level, before McKiernan added to the Newtown tally. The visitors introduced Aidan Christy to the action early on, the full back’s first game in Owen Roes colours since 2007 when he moved to St.Brigids of Antrim.

Kevin Gallagher slotted two placed kicks on 22 and 24 minutes with Paul Devine keeping Owen Roes in touch with a well taken score. The ‘home’ side added another score via their number nine, before Cathal Mc Shane had a great chance of a goal. However the Owen Roes forward was rushed by the Newtown keeper, and sent his effort over the bar.

As the game entered injury time, Davy Harte reduced the gap to one benefitting from a quickly taken free kick.

Half Time: Newtownstewart 0-10 Owen Roes 1-6

With the game in the balance at the start of the second half Owen Roes’ young side would’ve been keen to make a good start to the second period in an attempt to grab their second win of the campaign.

However it was Newtownstewart who burst fast from the traps. Three Ryan Mayse scores, and a single score from Gallagher got them on the board, before Stephen Harper’s dead ball score saw a brief Owen Roes retort. Indeed things could have been worse for the home side who were indebted to a great Ronan McNulty stop in the visiting goals.

Gallagher (0-2) and Ryan Mayse added to their personal tallies to stretch the Newtown advantage and seal the points. Both sides traded two scores each late on with Andy Devine and Charles O’Doherty the scorers for Owen Roes.

Ronan McNulty, Conor Doherty, Brendan Mc Crossan, Kevin Kelly, Paul Devine (0-1), Stephen Dooher, Gerard Devine, Brendan Boggs (0-2), Seamus Dooher, Eamon Mc Bride, Davy Harte (0-1), Cathal Mc Shane (0-1), Ryan Mc Shane (1-0), Stephen Harper (0-2). Subs: Aidan Christy for Doherty (19 mins), Charles O’Doherty (0-1) for Eamon Mc Bride (50 mins), Willie Doherty for Kevin Kelly (53 mins), Andy Devine (0-1) for Harte (53 mins).
