The emergence of Tyrone as a force again in senior football and the excellent development of this current squad over the past four years has been underlined with confirmation that two key players have been nominated for TG4 all star awards.

Fresh from captaining St Macartan’s to the four in a row of Tyrone championships at the weekend Niamh Mc Girr has been nominated alongside Dublin’s Olwyn Carey and Mayo’s Ciara Whyte for the left half back position while Aodh Ruadh star Emma Jane Gervin has been nominated at midfield.

The Tyrone pair are among just four Ulster players in the 45 named on Monday. Ulster champions Donegal are represented by Geraldine Mc Laughlin with Armagh’s  Caroline O’Hanlon  also nominated for the All Star team which will be announced at a gala banquet at the Citywest Hotel on Saturday, November 16, along with the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Players’ Player of the Year award winners, the Provincial Young Players of the Year and the 2019 inductee into the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) Hall of Fame.

Dublin who made history by claiming a third successive all Ireland title lead the way with 13 nominations while there are nine nominations each for Galway and Mayo.

Tyrone reached the all Ireland quarter final where they were beaten by Cork but in terms of progression they will play in the senior championship again next year. Tyrone manager Gerry Moane who remains unsure about his future in the role says the players nominations is a great tribute to them,

“Niamh is a great defender who has been one of the real drivers of our side over the past couple of years. She can get a score or two as well as she proved against Donegal in the Ulster championship. Like Emma Jane she really deserves to get an all star let alone just a nomination. Emma Jane is one of the country’s best midfielders. She joined us in October 2016 and never looked back, such a committed amd telented footballer. I really am delighted for the girls. As I said from day one it has always been about the players and it’s great when they are recognised like this.”
