Tyrone Under 20s began their season on Saturday at Healy Park with a 2-10 to 1-3 win over a spirited Antrim side who will head home wondering how they managed to record only four scores over the course of the game.

Paul Devlin’s team looked ring rusty at times, especially in the first half, but they still managed to reach the break four points clear leading 1-5 to 1-1.

Mattie Murnaghan playing at full forward opened the scoring after eleven seconds before a brace of Ethan Jordan points and a score from the industrious Ryan Mc Cabe put the Red Hands  0-4 to no score clear after thirteen minutes.

Tyrone looked somewhat disjointed at times and were punished on twenty minutes. Adam Loughran capitalised on a long ball into the home defence which deceived everyone. The wing half forward galloped through and finished with style to bring his team back into the game. Corner forward Pat Shivers then pointed a free to tie the game 0-4 to 1-1.

The Red Hands however regained the lead and the initiative with a lovely score from Daniel Millar before midfielder Kevin Barker got on the end of a Matthew Murnaghan pass to palm the ball to the net to send Tyrone in at the break 1-5 to 1-1 ahead.

Both teams were guilty of poor distribution and careless use of the ball but it was Tyrone that looked the side most likely as they kept Antrim at arm’s length for the remainder of the game. Pat Shivers opened the scoring seven minutes after the break with a free but Tyrone hit 1-5 without reply to seal the win. The highlight was a super goal from the foot of Joe Oguz after a fine pass from team captain Antoin Fox.

Points from Barker, Oguz, Ethan Jordan and Ryan Jones extended the Tyrone lead as the game reached injury time. Antrim forward Shivers had the final say with another converted free but it made little difference to the result as Tyrone recorded a 2-10 to 1-3 win.

Manager Paul Devlin will be delighted with the win but will be well aware that greater challenges lie ahead for his team.
