Cavan 1-12 Tyrone 0-18

Tyrone are seventy minutes away from the super eights after they held off a determined challenge from Cavan at Brewster Park in Enniskillen on Saturday evening.

The Red Hands were the better side in the first half and held a four point lead at the break but despite scoring first on the restart they failed to build on that. Instead Cavan hit back and the only goal of the game enabled them to draw level. It was point for point but crucially Cavan were never able to get their noses in front and it was Tyrone who deserved booked their place in the next round.

The winners dominated the early stages of the game and after Captain Mattie Donnelly had opened the scoring in the first attack they raced into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead thanks to points from Peter Harte, Niall Sludden and Tiernan McCann, Ciaran Brady the Cavan marksman. McCann and keeper Mickey O’Neill started in place of Cathal McCarron and Niall Morgan respectively while Darra McVeety and Conor Moynagh, who had both got their red cards rescinded, started for the Breffni men.

Cavan looked in trouble but they then enjoyed a purple patch. McVeety, who started, hoisted over a long range point before midfielder Killian Clarke burst through to close the gap to the minimum. At the end of the opening quarter the sides were level after Gearoid McKiernan fired over a good point from distance. It took a good intervention from McCann to deny a Cavan goal chance before Tyrone got on top again. Centre half back Frank Burns kicked a brilliant point from outside the 45m line but Cavan came straight down the field for McVeety to get his second score of the afternoon. That proved to be their last score of the opening period though as Tyrone finished with a flourish.

Cathal McShane and McCann both landed quality scores from out on the right wing before Tyrone broke at pace for McShane to fist over the bar. Tyrone were on top and Donnelly got his second of the half, this time with his weaker left foot, to bring the scoring to an end as the Red Hands led 0-9 to 0-5.

A Connor McAliskey free increased Tyrone’s lead on the restart but instead of kicking on it was Cavan who fought back. McKiernan knocked over a free before Martin Reilly palmed in a 43rd minute goal. Cavan now had the momentum with McKiernan landing a superb equaliser from distance. They were never able to get their noses in front though as Tyrone were able to respond each time to a Cavan score. Substitute Ronan O’Neill, who made a major impact, knocked over a free before Sludden kicked a quality point.

McKiernan and Sean Johnston helped bring Cavan level before Richard Donnelly and Conor Moynagh traded scores. O’Neill and Burns both scored again before O’Neill and Peter Harte put Tyrone four in front. Two McKiernan points closed the gap again but Tyrone held on, Cavan finishing the game with fourteen men after Ciaran Brady picked up a second yellow card deep into injury time.
