Tyrone remain on course for another successful defence of their Mc Kenna Cup title following a hard fought but well deserved win over neighbours Fermanagh on Sunday.

The Erne lads went into Sunday’s game in confident mood on the back of some very impressive performances in the sectional games including last Wednesday night’s win over Donegal. With a large and vociferous home support roaring them on Rory Gallagher’s team were well up for the battle.

Tyrone though weathered the early storm and points from Declan Mc Clure and Conor Mc Aliskey (2) had the Red Hands three in front after eleven minutes.

Fermanagh responded positively however and scores from Aidan Breen, Barry Mulrone and Seamus Quigley had the Erne lads level on fourteen minutes.

Tyrone then began to dominate possession and with Mattie Donnelly and Niall Sludden pushing forward at every opportunity Mickey Harte’s team reached the break three ahead following points from Darren Mc Curry (2) and Ritchie Donnelly. Fermanagh were dealt a further blow when they were reduced to fourteen men right on half time following a second yellow card for corner back Kane Connor.

The weather deteriorated considerably after the break making conditions difficult for both sets of players and the match officials. Ryan Jones gave Fermanagh early hope with the opening score of the second half but they failed to really trouble the Tyrone defence after that. Points from Darren Mc Curry and Ronan O’Neill kept Fermanagh at arm’s length and Mickey Harte’s team made it through to another Mc Kenna Cup final on a final score of 0-8 to 0-4.
