Kerry defeated a gallant Tyrone team 0-18 to 1-11 at a rain soaked Croke Park on Sunday in a game that was high on quality and drama and kept the 53,000 plus crowd enthralled throughout.

Tyrone will probably look back on this one as one that got away following a host of missed frees and squandered goal opportunities.

There was little between the teams during the opening thirty five minutes as both sides set out their stall and a game of cat and mouse ensued. Some lovely scores and close control made a mockery of conditions as Buckley, Bradley, Donnelly and Morgan all landed fabulous points.

A disputed 45 for Kerry after the ball clearly came off Donaghy was cancelled out before the Kerry full forward finally caught a high ball into the square on the stroke of half time to send Kerry in one up at the short whistle.

Kerry began the second half better having made several changes at the break including withdrawing their team captain. However Tyrone continued to battle hard but spilled possession and poor decision making continuously cost the Red Hands.

Several key decisions went against them before they were awarded a 60th minute penalty which Peter Harte dispatched to the net. Tyrone quickly added a Mark Bradley point and suddenly the momentum was with Mickey Harte’s side.

However once again the key decisions left the Ulster men frustrated as Maurice Deegan inexplicably denied Tyrone a second penalty when substitute Padraig McNulty was instead booked for diving.

Unfortunately for Tyrone, Kerry drew strength from this decision and added four late points to make it through to another all Ireland final.
