Holders Tyrone made it eight titles from nine Mc Kenna Cup finals with a 0-11 to 1-5 win over Monaghan in front of almost four thousand spectators at Armagh on Saturday evening.

In a dominant first half the Red Hands controlled the game for long periods with Michael O’Neill and Ronan Mc Namee particularly impressive.

Frank Burns landed Tyrone’s first point after three minutes with Michael O’Neill and Daniel Kerr also on target shortly after. Monaghan’s Shane Carey opened the Farney account with nine minutes on the clock and a brace of scores from the industrious Connor Mc Carthy tied the game after twenty five minutes.

By this time Tyrone had introduced Darren Mc Curry for the injured David Mulgrew and the Edendork ace helped his side reach the break leading 0-8 to 0-3 with three fine points. Kieran Mc Geary and Ronan O’Neill were also on target for the Red Hands as Mickey Harte’s side finished the first half strongly.

Monaghan were much improved after the break and came out with a greater focus and sense of commitment. In a low scoring second half they did enjoy considerable amounts of possession but rarely troubled the Tyrone rearguard which was superbly marshalled by Hugh Pat Mc Geary.

Ronan O’Neill stretched the Tyrone lead with a fine pointed free nine minutes into the second half before Carey and Mc Carthy scored to reduce the gap to four. O’Neill added a further brace of points and although Monaghan found the net courtesy of midfielder Barry Mc Bennett it was a case of too little too late. Tyrone made it title number seventeen with a deserved three point win.

Next up for the Red Hands is the opening National League fixture with Meath.
