Tyrone hosted neighbours Fermanagh in the opening round of the Ulster Minor Championship at Healy Park on Saturday and after a dominant display recorded a 2-19 to 0-3 win.

The Red Hands were quick to settle and led 0-6 to no score after ten minutes. Points from the highly impressive James Mulgrew, Joel Kerr, Eoin Long, Aodhan Quinn and Peter Garrity put them in a strong position as the Erne county struggled to create chances.  Tyrone’s running game and good use of space and possession had the young Fermanagh side on the back foot from early on.

Tomas Cathcart eventually broke their duck with a converted free but Tyrone’s response was as ruthless as it was significant. Peter Garrity’s speculative effort from out wide on the right dipped under the crossbar and put the young Red Hands 1-6 to 0-1 ahead.

With less than ten minutes of the first period remaining Tyrone were very much playing on the front foot. Eoin Long, Jason Mulgrew and Peter Garrity continued to bring the game to their opponents and they rounded off the scoring with a fine Eoin Long goal on the stroke of half time.

The home side came out for the second half in determined form with Thomas Meenan, Mulgrew, Joel Kerr and Peter Colton all adding points to a growing tally. Meenan added a further brace of points and came close to hitting the net when he broke through only to see his attempt  sail beyond the post.

Tyrone ran their bench and came close several times to adding to their total. However in spite of their possession and territorial dominance they only managed to add one further point during the closing twelve minutes of the second half. Substitute Odhran Curran rounded off the scoring for Tyrone to bring their total to 2-19. Credit to Fermanagh they continued to battle right to the end and hit the last two points of the game in injury time courtesy of Ronan Fitzpatrick’s accuracy from placed balls.
