Tyrone under 16s faced Donegal in the Buncrana Cup on Saturday at Killyclogher and came away with a 3-12 to 1-12 win. The young Red Hands began confidently and dominated the opening exchanges playing some delightful football. Aidan Hegarty and Brian Gallagher hit early points while Tommy Taggart got the first of his team’s three goals.

Donegal gradually worked their way into the game with Shane Callaghan particularly prominent. Tyrone extended their lead with points from Hegarty, Taggart and Liam Corry to move 1-5 to 0-3 ahead. Both teams enjoyed periods of dominance but Tyrone looked the better side attacking at every opportunity. Kelvin Hughes added a second goal for Tyrone following an excellent turnover by Matty Mc Nally. Donegal responded with points from Luke Callaghan, Danny Browne and Tiernan Ward to reach half time with the score 2-6 to 0-7 in favour of Tyrone.

The visitors were much improved after the break and a goal from Tommy Roche three minutes into the second half brought them back into the game. Points from Matty Mc Nally and Owen O’Neill calmed any Tyrone nerves and extended their lead to four points 2-9 to 1-8.

Owen O’Neill and Aiden Friel swapped scores before Shane Callaghan converted a huge free for Donegal to narrow the gap to three. A further long range effort from play by Callaghan took the gap back to two points with five minutes remaining. Matty Mc Nally pointed for Tyrone to extend the lead to three before Kevin Corry and Liam Corry combined for Tyrone’s third goal to leave the final score 3-12 to 1-12 in favour of Tyrone.
