TYRONE 1-12

The Nicky Rackard Cup holders turned in a quality all round team performance to beat Ulster neighbours Donegal in Saturday’s first round encounter at rain lashed O’Donnell Park Letterkenny. These teams had met twice already in a somewhat protracted promotion/relegation playoff that eventually resulted in a Donegal four point win. The cup opener however saw a reversal of that score-line with Tyrone much improved from that disappointing defeat.

Justin and Aidan Kelly both excelled at midfield, Padraig McHugh, Dermott Begley and Tiernan Morgan shored up the half back line while up front talisman captain Damien Casey, who hit 1-7, was always a huge scoring threat. It wasn’t a day for classy hurling but this was a workmanlike and very disciplined team performance from Mattie Lennon’s side.

Tyrone led by just a point at the break, Sean Og Grogan opened the scoring within ten seconds of the start but a quick response put the hosts in the box seat. Tyrone responded with Casey latching on points and finding the net from a really difficult angle. Once again however Donegal responded strongly hitting 0-4 without reply. A late free from Casey left a point between the sides at the break.

Tyrone took to the field for the start of the second half with a real sense of purpose. Points from Casey, Conor Grogan and two long range beauties from Justy Kelly put Tyrone in a very strong position. Henderson replied for Donegal but with Tyrone hurling well all over the park and some teak tough defending backed up by a solid work ethic there was no way back for the home side. Two late Casey points eased Tyrone home as the captain underscored his and Tyrone’s display by being the last line of defence when Sean Mc Veigh went for a long range pile driver at the death.
