Tyrone are through to their first National League division One final in ten years following their 2-15 to 2-11 win over Kildare this afternoon at Croke Park. The Red Hands came from a point behind at the break to record a four point win over Kieran Mc Geeney’s side.
An eighth minute goal from Mattie Donnelly put his side 1-1 to no score in front but Kildare took over from then and bossed the remainder of the first half. A Paddy Brophy major put the Lily Whites ahead as half time approached but a free from Sean Cavanagh left the minimum between the teams at the break 1-6 to 1-5. Tyrone were struggling to cope with the strong running and tackling of Kildare and were in need of an improved second half if they were to prevail.
Justin Mc Mahon was introduced to the action and with Aidan Cassidy now anchoring the midfield Tyrone began to win the lion’s share of possession. An early point from Martin Penrose was followed by a super goal from the industrious Mark Donnelly and Tyrone took the lead. It was a lead they would maintain to the end as Stevie O’Neill rolled back the years with a couple of fabulous points from play and Tyrone went on to win 2-15 to 2-11.
