Tyrone Senior Hurlers produced a superb display of skill and determination to get the better of Mayo in their Nicky Rackard Cup clash at Healy Park on Sunday.

Ace scorer Damien Casey is sure to get a lot of the credit for his 1-12 but this was no one man show as every player contributed handsomely to the cause.

Casey bagged a brace of early points and found the net in the eleventh minute to put his team ahead. Two further Casey points stretched the lead before Mayo responded with five in a row courtesy of Adrian Philips, Shane Boland, Sean Kenny and Kieran Kiely to level the game at 1-5 to 0-8.

Chris Kearns landed a fine point to put Tyrone one up before Sean Reagan and Casey swapped scores to send Tyrone in at the break leading 1-8 to 0-9.

The second half saw lots of missed chances, especially from Mayo, but there was no let up in the competitive nature of the exchanges. Dean Rafferty, Chris Kearns and Dermott Begley denied the Westerners time and space as they, along with their team mates, ran themselves to a standstill.

Casey and Shane Borland exchanged scores throughout the second period as Mayo sought to reduce the gap. However points from Lorcan Devlin and Ryan Mc Kernan helped extend the Red Hand lead. Mayo threw caution to the wind in the closing minutes but Tyrone kept their nerve and held on for a superb 1 -15 to 0-15 win.
