Tyrone left it very late to get the win in Mayo this afternoon with a late late penalty from team captain Stevie O’Neill the decisive score of the day. This was a strange game, one that Tyrone controlled for long periods with Mark Donnelly superb for the Red Hands while their defence seemed totally on top as they entered the last five minutes of the game four points to the good leading 0-12 to 0-8. However a Keith Higgins goal and late points from Mc Loughlin and Doherty completely changed the momentum of the game and Mayo found themselves two in front deep in added time. Tyrone were forced to gamble and a high ball from O’Neill was broken to Mark Donnelly by Ronan O’Neill. The Carrickmore man was fouled but it took Maurice Deegan a long time to blow for the penalty. After some debate and mind games up stepped the Clan na Gael man to send Clarke the wrong way and put Tyrone in front again. Mayo did have one further chance to salvage a draw but Donal Vaughan shot wide and Tyrone headed home with the win and the points to go joint top of Division One unbeaten after two games.
