Armagh 1-10 Tyrone 1-12

Old rivals Armagh and Tyrone got their McKenna Cup campaigns off with a bang at the Athletic Grounds on Sunday afternoon with the visitors edging a keenly contested encounter in front of 8463 spectators.

The game began at a brisk pace with the teams exchanging early points. Team captain and full forward Sean Cavanagh was in fine scoring form for Tyrone and attracted considerable attention from the Armagh defence. One such exchange inside the opening ten minutes resulted in Armagh captain Ciaran McKeever and Tyrone midfielder Colm Cavanagh both being shown straight red cards. The sides shared the opening half a dozen points with Sean Cavanagh notching all three for the Red Hands and Michael McKenna and Gavin McParland on target for Armagh.

With both sides reduced to fourteen players Armagh took control of proceedings with points from Ethan Rafferty, Eugene McVerry and McKenna although they were grateful to keeper Niall Geoghegan when he turned what looked like a goal-bound Padraig McNulty effort around the post.

Points from Darren McCurry and Cavanagh reduced the deficit to 0-6 to 0-5 at the break, a first half that saw the visitors kick seven wides to their opponents one.

Armagh introduced Crossmaglen pair Jamie Clarke and Tony Kernan after half time. Their presence lifted Armagh and the home side increased their advantage through McKenna and Kernan despite losing Finnian Moriarty to a second yellow card. McCurry kept Tyrone in touch before corner back Aidan McCrory opened his account with the county side when he got on the end of a fine pass from Sean Cavanagh and fired in a brilliantly crafted goal.

Tyrone led temporarily but Armagh responded with a superb McVerry goal and with ten minutes to go they led by three points and looked set for victory. Tyrone however dug deep and with their subs prominent they fought back to level through McCurry [2] and Peter Hughes.

The home side’s indiscipline cost them again when full back Arron Findon was dismissed for a second booking and Tyrone took full advantage to grab victory with late scores from Cathal McShane and McCurry.
