Tyrone confirmed their place in the semi finals of the Mc Kenna Cup with a 5-16 to 0-7 win over a very disappointing Armagh this evening in Omagh. A large crowd turned out for this round three clash between two sides that once reigned supreme in Ulster football. The visitors began brightly with scores from Carragher and Rafferty but after Tyrone drew level courtesy of a Ronan O’Neill point in the sixth minute Armagh struggled to threaten for the remainder of the opening half. The Red Hands landed two fine goals through Ciaran Mc Ginley and Mattie Donnelly while nine players in total contributed to a first half total of 2-10. Paddy Mc Neice, Emmett Mc Kenna, Peter Harte, Niall Morgan, Shay Mc Guigan and Conan Grugan all found the target as the home side opened up a twelve point lead at the break.
Any chance Armagh had of making a game of it depended on a solid start to the second half. Unfortunately for them it was Tyrone that came out in determined mood with early goals from PJ Lavery and Peter Harte (pen). Lavery bagged a second goal for the home team with less than five minutes left on the clock. Despite the fact that they were in total control throughout Tyrone continued to work hard right until the end of the game and could easily have finished the match with seven or eight goals.
Armagh will go away from this match wondering just where they go from here. It is a long time since Tyrone enjoyed such a comprehensive and one sided victory over their old rivals and the Orchard County management will face a difficult job lifting their team after this. The final score of 5-16 to 0-7 in no way flattered Tyrone and Mickey Harte’s team can now look forward to a semi final meeting with Derry in Omagh on Sunday afternoon.
