Tyrone Ex-Pats Welcomed at Christchurch McKennas

A very happy Christmas to all our readers abroad but especially to all Tyrone expats who are currently residing in New Zealand. With the present economic difficulties in Ireland many young people have decided to emigrate in search of work and New Zealand has become one of the most popular venues for our emigrants to settle in.

Of course sometimes you only begin to appreciate your identity and culture when you leave the comfort and safety of your own surroundings. The GAA has always been a welcoming port of call for Irish emigrants and in Christchurch the local club is not only proving very popular but is growing and growing. at present there is only one GAA club in the city of Christchurch. It is called Christchurch McKennas and is named after the guy who founded the club and who was tragically killed in the earthquake. The club competes in 3 tournaments a year – in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.

With the recent influx of Irish people a social league has been developed which is proving very popular with people of all ages and abilities. This year there were 9 teams and all games take place on Thursday evenings. The social league consists of mixed teams playing 12 a side, 4 girls and 8 boys. A girl’s point is worth 2 and a girl’s goal is worth 4. 90% of players are Irish but there are a few Kiwis, Aussies, Dutch, etc. There are 2 leagues per year, usually Feb-May and Sept-Dec. The group would be keen for any other ex pats out there who wish to come along and get involved to join them.

In the mean time from all at Teamtalkmag.com we wish Christchurch Mc Kennas and all GAA folk down under season’s greetings and best wishes for 2013.
