Tyrone’s new look under 21 side travelled to Breffni Park on Wednesday evening more in hope than expectation as they prepared to take on the reigning Ulster champions.
Fergal Logan’s side played with the aid of a very strong breeze in the first half but Cavan showed their craft and experience as they controlled the game for most of a low scoring opening thirty minutes. Tyrone missed several reasonable chances to move ahead but Cavan with Argue and Sankey dominant in the midfield and team captain Moyna marshalling the defence looked the better side.
With a game against Derry already behind them Cavan were sharper to the ball and better in possession. They retained the football well and had Tyrone chasing shadows at times as they created several good chances of scores. Indeed it took a brilliant clearance from corner back Ciaran Mc Laughlin to deny Joe Dillon a certain goal midway through the first half.
Tyrone improved after the break and with Mark Bradley working hard were in a reasonable position midway through the half. However an unfortunate mix up over a kick out offered Cavan the opportunity for a goal and the Breffni forwards made no mistake. Tyrone continued to work hard but Cavan held all the aces and when they introduced Conor Madden with ten minutes remaining a difficult night for the Tyrone defence became even more difficult as he swung over a couple of fine points and almost bagged a late goal.
Cavan eased to an eight point win but Tyrone’s young side will feel the margin of victory does not reflect the efforts they made in the game.
