Tyrone hosted Kerry at Garvaghy in the final round of their Division Two National Hurling League campaign and after a battling display lost out 1-19 to 1-13. The home side will take heart from their performance knowing that with a bit of luck and a bit more composure on the ball the result could have been even closer.

Aidan Kelly, who was forced to leave the field at half time with an injury, opened the scoring inside the first minute as Tyrone threw down the gauntlet. Shane Nolan and Niall Mulcahy pointed to put wind assisted Kerry in front before Sean Duffin fired the Red Hands level at 0-2 apiece with four minutes on the clock.

Kerry found the net with their next attack as the impressive Nolan took advantage of hesitancy in the Tyrone defence. Nolan and Cillian Hayes tagged on points for the visitors before Mickey Little added a brace of points for the home side.

Kerry were dealt a blow when they lost midfielder Paudie O’Connor to a second yellow card but even then they remained on top as five points from Padraig Boyle moved them clear before Mark Mc Cann hit Tyrone’s fifth point of the game to send the teams in at the break with the Munster side leading 1-9 to 0-5.

Despite being reduced to fourteen Kerry remained on top in the second half as Boyle and Luke Crowley fired over the first four points of the second half to put their side eleven clear.

Sean Duffin got Tyrone’s challenge back on track with a brace of points before Kiefer Morgan announced his arrival with a fine point. Boyle and Oisin Maunsell stretched the Kerry lead before Duffin hit his fifth point of the game. Kerry however were not to be denied and even though a goal from Kiefer Morgan raised the home side’s  spirits the visitors continued to look sharp and could have added at least three goals but for superb goalkeeping by Conor Mc Elhatton in the Tyrone goals.

Late points from Correy Bell and Rory Weir wrapped up the scoring for Tyrone to leave the final score Tyrone 1-13, Kerry 1-19.
