Tyrone and Roscommon served up a real cracker of a Division 3A National Hurling League top of the table clash at Omagh on Sunday afternoon. The match finished in a 1-14 to 1-13 victory for the Red Hands but it was a game that was in the balance right up until the third minute of additional time before late scores from Justin Kelly and Damien Casey sealed a home win.

Roscommon began the game well with a goal from Ronan O’Meara five minutes in. However Tyrone responded almost immediately as full forward Sean Og Grogan maintained his fine goal scoring run with a seventh minute finish to the net.

Both sides swopped scores as the first half remained close. The Fallon brothers, Michael Kelly and Jason Kilkenny ensured the team in blue and gold reached the break 1-7 to 1-6 ahead but Tyrone manager Mattie Lennon would have been more than happy with the work-rate and commitment of his players during the opening thirty five minutes. Damien Casey, Christopher Cross, Tiernan Morgan and Conor Grogan all landed first half scores for Tyrone.

There was no let up in the pace of the second half as the visitors showed their quality and experience right from the start. Kelly, Fallon and Aidan Murphy were all on target but it took some desperate defending from Conor Mc Nally, Mike O’Gorman and Dermot Begley to ensure Roscommon were held goal less in an exciting second half. By the midway point the Rossies led by three and were looking ominously assured in general play.

Tyrone needed something to get them back on track but three missed frees from Casey appeared to suggest that it was not going to be their day. O’Meara pointed to put Roscommon four in front with twelve minutes remaining as the visitors made the most of their chances.

Strangely that was as good as it got for Roscommon as Tyrone dug deep to get themselves back into the game. Aidan and Justin Kelly in midfield, Tiernan Morgan, Damien Casey and Conor Grogan all raised their game and their team mates responded. Three converted Casey points, including one from over a hundred metres out left the minimum between the teams as the game entered the closing minutes.

Knowing all they needed was a draw Tyrone sensed the game was there for the taking. A fabulous point from Justin Kelly drew the sides level and suddenly it was Tyrone who looked the team most likely. With time running out Roscommon centre back Michael Kelly attempted to set up a match winning attack for his team. Driving from defence he conceded a free seventy metres out which Damien Casey dispensed with great coolness and accuracy to put his side one in front. The ball sailed over the crossbar just as the clock reached thirty eight minutes and referee Justin Heffernan sounded the full time whistle.

The result means that Tyrone have completed their National League programme undefeated but more importantly as table toppers. They are through to the Division 3A final where they will meet old foes Monaghan in a fortnight’s time.

Final score: Tyrone 1-14, Roscommon 1-13.

Tyrone scorers: Sean Og Grogan 1-0, Damien Casey 0-10, Christopher Cross 0-1, Conor Grogan 0-1, Justin Kelly 0-1, Tiernan Morgan 0-1.
