Tyrone Girls Come Up Short In Under 16 Ulster Final
Sunday 31.07.2011

Tyrone V Monaghan Under 16 Ulster final 2011.
Monaghan got off to a flying start in the opening minutes of the Ulster final in Donagh County Fermanagh when they rattled the Tyrone net to let Tyrone know that they had no intentions of going home empty handed. Looking strong in the first half Monaghan ran at the Tyrone defence and managed to build on their lead by slotting over a number of points before a brace of goals within minutes from Tyrone’s Niamh O Neill and Melissa Mc Cann kept the Red Hand girls in contention. With Monaghan shooting a number of wides Tyrone should have been capitalising on these missed opportunities but a sharp Monaghan defence kept the Tyrone attack at bay. Monaghan managed to fire home two more goals from the boot of their sharp shooting number 11 Leanne Maguire who added to her personal return with a number of well taken points.
With the Score at half time Monaghan 3.6 to Tyrone’s 2.1 the Tyrone team knew they had it all to do. Tyrone looked stronger early in the second half and appeared to be staging a fight back as they began taking the game to Monaghan. Tyrone’s Niamh O Neill scored a fine goal after a determined run through the Monaghan defence. This was followed soon after with another goal from Substitute Grainne Rafferty who had replaced Kerry Mc Garvey. These goals seemed to shake the first half confidence of the Monaghan team and brought Tyrone to within 2 points of the leaders. Within minutes however Monaghan managed to regain their composure and a goal from their quick fire number 13 Amy Murray evaded the clutches of Tyrone’s keeper Grainne Mc Anenly and this was quickly followed by yet another point from Leanne Maguire. These scores meant Tyrone had it all to do as Monaghan continued to dominate. In the final quarter of the game a missed penalty from Tyrone meant that Monaghan had done enough to keep Tyrone at bay. Monaghan closed out the game with 2 more goals and another 2 points before claiming victory with a well deserved 6.10 to 4.02 win.
