Tyrone minors got their Electric Ireland Ulster Minor Championship campaign off to the perfect start in Ballybofey on Saturday evening as they romped to a 14 point win over their hosts. A man of the match performance from Mark Hayes was backed up by a superb all round team performance in a game where the Red Hands rarely looked threatened.

Hayes hit a goal in either half and finished the contest with 2-4. By the half time break Tyrone led 2-7 to 1-5. The Tyrone full forward’s opening goal was a cut in from the right hand side and a neat finish after he rounded Corey Byrne in the Donegal goals. The second goal in the 21st  minute was a rocket of a shot to the top left hand corner of the net from Moortown’s Tarlach. Quinn.

Donegal had led 0-3 to 0-2 by the end of the opening quarter thanks to points from Padraig McGettigan. However Tyrone seized the initiative through frees from Carrickmore’s Mark Fullerton and with Hayes on target with 1-3 they managed to see out the half with a five point lead.

The second half lacked the same intensity as the opening 30 minutes with Tyrone firing home three further goals through Mark Hayes, Michael McGleenan and Cormac McBride.

In defence Lorcan McBride controlled the edge of the square and he was ably backed up by the excellent Cormac Quinn and Lorcan Kilpatrick in the corners and Kevin Barker at 6.
