Tyrone senior Hurlers went into their Division 3A league clash with Monaghan on Sunday in confident mood. Having won their two opening league fixtures quite convincingly hopes were high that Mattie Lennon’s side could continue their fine run of form.

Unfortunately they came up against a full strength Monaghan side determined to get their own season back on track and after a highly competitive and intriguing game it was the Farney men who emerged triumphant on a 4-12 to 2-13 score line. Mind you 1-1 of that tally came deep in injury time as Tyrone chased a one point deficit and left themselves exposed at the back.

Tyrone played wind assisted in the first half and looked to be well placed to maintain their good start when they led 1-5 to 0-2 after Damian Casey hit the net twelve minutes in. Monaghan refused to panic and responded well with points from Stephen Lambe and Fergal Rafter and a Mark Treanor goal to tie the game at 1-7 apiece after twenty seven minutes.

Three fine points in the closing minutes of the opening half from Tiernan Morgan (1) and Casey (2) meant the home side went in at the break leading 1-10 to 1-7.

Monaghan made the perfect start to the second half with a second Mark Treanor goal three minutes in to level the game before a fine point from the same player a minute later gave the Farney men the lead for the first time.

Both sides enjoyed periods of control in the second period but the strong breeze allowed Monaghan to relieve their defence when under pressure from Tyrone.

A third Monaghan goal from Lambe midway through the second half put them three clear but Tyrone came straight back with a superb goal from the stick of Brian Mc Gurk. Rafter and Treanor pointed for the visitors but Casey and Mulgrew landed points to keep the home side in it.

With time running out Tyrone pushed for the equalising score but were caught out at the back when Lambe pounced for his team’s fourth goal deep in injury time after sub Cathal Power had landed a fine point.

Final score Tyrone 2-13, Monaghan 4-12
