Tyrone 0-15 Down 0-11

Tyrone are sixty minutes away from completing the double at U17 level after they saw off a spirited challenge from Down in the championship semi-final at Clones on Saturday afternoon.

The key spell of the game was the third quarter as Tyrone increased their four point advantage to nine. The winners may have only scored once in the final quarter but the damage had been done as they set up a final shootout with Cavan on June 11th. Ruairi McCormick and Darragh Canavan exchanged early points before Thomas Hoy hoisted over a fine score from out on the right wing. Canavan then hit a superb point as well but Down were level by the end of the opening quarter thanks to a Sheelan Johnston brace.
Ben Gormley and Michael Conroy then combined for Canavan to score via the post but in the next attack Down midfielder Ryan O’Higgins landed an outstanding effort from out on the right wing with the outside of his boot. That was in the 18th minute but it proved to be their last score of the first half. The hard working Matthew Murnaghan put Tyrone back in front and they went on to dominate the test of the first half. Conroy knocked over a free before Hoy turned sharply to split the posts. Canavan then turned provider for Cormac Donnelly to point to leave Tyrone leading 0-8 to 0-4 at the short whistle.

It was in the third quarter that the winners really put their foot on the gas to move clear of their opponents. Canavan started it all off with Daniel Millar, Donnelly and substitute Ethan Jordan all on target as well. A free from Down Captain Matthew Carville stopped the rot for them before a brilliant Canavan score left Tyrone leading 0-15 to 0-6 with eight minutes left on the clock.

To their credit Down finished strongly with points from three Carville frees and efforts from play from substitutes Eoghan Byrne and Justin Clarke. During those closing stages though they had substitute keeper Conway to thank for a superb save to deny the livewire Canavan a goal.

Tyrone scorers – Darragh Canavan 0-5, Ethan Jordan 0-3, Cormac Donnelly 0-2, Thomas Hoy 0-2, Matthew Murnaghan 0-1, Michael Conroy 0-1, Daniel Millar 0-1

Down scorers – Matthew Carville 0-5, Sheelan Johnston 0-2, Ryan O’Higgins 0-1, Ruairi McCormick 0-1, Eoghan Byrne 0-1, Justin Clarke 0-1
