The Tyrone juvenile handball squad has been selected for the 2013 Ulster championships following three weeks of county trials, and training is well underway for the challenges that lie ahead for this talented group of players in February and March.
There were some close battles for places in the squad throughout the month of January, particularly in the under-12, under-13 and under-16 boys categories, with some very good players eventually missing out on the team.
Included in the squad are some of the players who helped to create history last season as Tyrone enjoyed a record breaking campaign in the All-Ireland juvenile championships, winning four titles in the 40×20 court and another four in the 60×30 competitions.
Sean Kerr, Jack Campbell and Aoife Kelly were among the group of Tyrone players who excelled on the national stage in 2012, while Lorcan McBride, Dara Curran, Antoin Fox, Ciara Mullan and Niall Allison all famously captured gold medals in the world handball championships in October.
And there are also four world silver medalists among the Tyrone contingent for 2013, namely Cormac Munroe, Elise McCrory, Jack Campbell and Darragh Canavan, son of legendary Tyrone footballer, Peter.
Overall this is another very strong group of handballers that will be representing Tyrone in the 2013 championship series but it will be a huge challenge trying to replicate the achievements of last year.

Meanwhile, Tyrone students will feature prominently in Thursday’s Ulster colleges handball finals in Truagh, County Monaghan, as some of the best young handballers from the county bid to collect their first silverware of 2013.
The girls finals were staged last week and brought provincial success for Dean Maguirc College, Carrickmore, and Loreto Convent Omagh.
Aoife Kelly and Elise McCrory claimed the under-15 doubles title for the ‘Dean’ and Maeve McElduff captured the senior singles title for Loreto Convent, who also took the runners-up prize in the under-13 doubles courtesy of Elizabeth McGarvey and Emer Kerr.
St Ciaran’s Ballygawley also featured in one of the girls finals as Michaela McCartan put up a great show against St Mary’s Lurgan’s world champion Dearbhla Coleman.
The boys Ulster finals are scheduled for Thursday, with one fixed for Saturday, and Tyrone will be very strongly represented, with as many as five different colleges from the county vying for provincial glory.
Dean Maguirc will feature in finals at under-13 singles (Cormac Munroe), under-13 doubles (Ronan Curran & Ciaran Cuddy), under-15 singles (Sean Kerr), under-17 singles (Patrick McCrory) and under-19 doubles (Sean Loughran & Ruairi Begley).
Omagh CBS have finals to look forward to at under-13 doubles (Antoin Fox & Lorcan McBride), under-15 doubles (Pauric Mullan & Ronan McKay) and under-17 doubles (Niall Allison & Matthew McCartan).
St Ciaran’s Ballygawley will be hoping for success in the under-15 and under-17 singles finals, courtesy of Jack Campbell and Johnny Woods, with Omagh College of Further Education pinning their hopes on Gabhainn McCrystal in the under-17 singles decider.
There will be a few all-Tyrone clashes in an attractive finals programme, which promises to be a great advertisement for colleges handball.
