Six young Tyrone players will be involved in Saturday’s All-Ireland juvenile handball championship semi-finals in Clarecastle as the county bids to reach four All-Ireland finals at the expense of their Munster counterparts.
Tyrone captured 9 out of a possible 24 Ulster juvenile titles last weekend and some of those players now go forward to meet the Munster champions tomorrow (Saturday).
Tyrone will be represented in County Clare by Turlough Clarke (U14 singles), Elise McCrory (U15 girls singles), Aoibhinn McAnespie & Sinead Donnelly (U15 girls doubles), and Jack Campbell & Sean Kerr (U16 doubles) who will face tough opponents from Clare and Tipperary this weekend following their impressive Ulster final victories in Kingscourt last Saturday.
Tyrone also fared brilliantly in the under-12 and under-13 boys and girls Ulster finals last weekend, although neither of these age groups go on to All-Ireland level.
Cormac Munroe (U13 singles), Antoin Fox and Darragh Canavan (U13 doubles) ensured a clean sweep for Tyrone in the under-13 boys competitions and Tyrone also collected the Ulster under-13 girls doubles title courtesy of Ciara Mullan and Michaela McCartan.
And the county secured both titles in the under-12 girls categories as Elizabeth McGarvey won the singles and Caitlin Conway and Mairead Fox claimed the doubles prize.
There was also some hard luck for other Tyrone players who came up against some really strong opponents in their provincial finals – Lorcan McBride (U12 singles), Dara Curran & Cahir Munroe (U12 doubles), and Emer Kerr (U13 girls singles).
Ciaran Cuddy and Conor Kelly were forced to concede the under-14 doubles final due to injury, while Aoife Kelly fought bravely against world champion Niamh Coleman in the under-16 girls singles final despite carrying a back injury.
